The importance of details. As a young boy, Steve Jobs received a task from his father: to paint the backyard fence. Enthusiastic about the opportunity, Steve eagerly agreed. After completing the task, he proudly showed his father, declaring that he had finished the job. However, his father noticed an important detail: Steve needed to paint the inside of the fence. Steve responded, “But Dad, no one is going to see the inside of the fence.” In a meaningful moment, his father looked at him and said, “But, Son, we will.” 

This lesson guided him in building Apple, a brand worth loving, and he shared six  principles for brand building:

  1. Focus on a few essential products and make them exceptional. Stand out from the competition by being the best in a select few.
  2. Embrace simplicity, design, and user experience. Steve Jobs prioritized these elements when creating the iPod and iPhone, leading to their success.
  3. Say “no” to countless good ideas and concentrate on the ones that matter. Focus means rejecting distractions and staying committed to your vision.

People think focus means saying yes to what you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m as proud of the things we haven’t done as I have. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.
